She&rsquo;s the one responsible for most of the photos of myself and my band that you see posted on my website and Facebook. Sonya is an artist/photographer who is originally from Canada, but has lived most of her life in California, until 2011, when she relocated to Cincinnati. Sonya has been active in the Fine Arts for over 30 years, and has developed a keen eye for color, concept, and composition. Blending Fine Art and photography is her passion, as evidenced in the artistic and creative photos that she produces. She&rsquo;s easy to work with, as well, and really does make everyone feel comfortable in front of the camera. Her photography is unique with an artsy/cool vintage/urban/grunge/modern vibe that I just love. I used Sonya&rsquo;s photos for the cover and back of my last two CD&rsquo;s, and I couldn&rsquo;t be happier with the way they came out! I could hide behind the guitar and it allowed me to feel rebellious.&rdquo; She formed her own band and started touring as soon as she finished high school, eventually joining a group called Stealing Horses. I have eight boxes of poetry, song lyrics, and journals, plus four milk crates full of cassette tapes with song ideas, my thoughts on life, band rehearsals...etc. I've kept every piece of writing I've ever done, and this past week I was inspired to dive in and see what magic these boxes hold. So far, I have transferred over almost seventeen hours of song ideas from the first milk crate, and plan to weed out the best ideas to address either on my own, or with various co-writers that I've begun working with for my next CD. I'm doing the same with my written manuscripts -- I've asked Sonya to scan and read through the pages to help identify the nuggets that I can use for either song lyrics or poetry I can eventually publish. I'm dyslexic, so reading comes slow for me and I've often felt that it has kept me from developing into the writer I've longed to be. Going through these old journals I'm finding that over the years I've captured my heart and my soul; I've writted about things too painful to face and I've captured observations and lessons learned completely. I'm thrilled to actually see that I CAN write -- dyslexia has been my wound and I've carried it like a prize. Funny how we hold on to things that are not always true-- we hide from our deepest fears and we fail to express to those around us all that we feel. I've been sober for two and a half years now -- life (both written and unwritten) is easier to face now... forgivness is easier to embrace. That captivating quality of her music, she said, has taken more than 30 years to perfect and is still changing today. She said a big part of that process has been rediscovering her blues roots. Root Boy Productions presents Richey in concert on Thursday at <a target="_new" href="http://playinghere.com/MT/Great_Falls/Machinery_Row/">Machinery Row in Great Falls. The show starts at 7 p.m. Richey said while growing up, she was influenced by acts such as Led Zeppelin, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimi Hendrix. Little did she know then how deeply blues would influence her sound, which she discovered after sharing the stage with legendary performer Albert King early in her career, she said. &quot;I didn't think too much of blues and wasn't aware of how deep those bands', Led Zeppelin especially, roots were in blues,&quot; she said. &quot;After I got the opportunity to play with Albert King I did some back-history lessons and realized that (blues legend) Willie Dixon was the sound of early Led Zeppelin, and I began to connect dots to the music I love.&quot; Richey said while it's one thing to appreciate the blues and replicate the sound of her idols, it's another to bring her own sound to the table. &quot;I write a lot of my own material and also have chosen to take those critical songs that I cut my teeth on and make them my own,&quot; she said. &quot;(Hendrix's) 'Hey Joe' is a signature song for me, but I'm committed to not doing someone else's version. I take what I learned from them and infuse it into my own vocabulary to pay tribute to them in a way that copying them wouldn't.&quot; She often has been described as Vaughn or Hendrix inside a woman's body. One of the reasons for the comparisons is her dedication to her instrument. Richey was born and raised in Lexington, Ky. She started learning guitar at age 15, practicing 12 hours a day for several years. She's been a guitar teacher for more than 30 years as well as a performer. She has lived in Cincinnati for many years since becoming a recording artist. Richey said that commitment has been a big part of her success. &quot;(Performing) has been my main form of self-expression so it's critical for my survival, for the survival of my soul,&quot; she said. &quot;With that said, in a way it's been easy. When you're trying to get your next breath you'll do anything. But it's been a lot of work. It takes everything you've got but when it's your main form of self-expression, it all seems worth it.&quot; Richey said she's always been drawn to the soul-based songs that laid the groundwork for her rock influences since she was a child attending one of the first white churches in the country to integrate. &quot;I love 'blues rock,' and a lot of the gospel music I was listening to as a kid also tied into this,&quot; she said. &quot;I grew up in Kentucky, and when I was a small child, we went to a lot of revivals and church services with the African-American community. I realized there that there was a drastic difference between black gospel and white gospel, and I later saw that with rock (songs). I gravitated to the blues- and gospel-based material because those rhythmic qualities drew me in, and I've found they really draw an audience in as well.&quot; Throughout her career, Richey has shared the stage with such legends as Lonnie Mack, and has opened for Joe Cocker, Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter, Foghat, REO Speedwagon, George Thorogood, Warren Zevon and James Brown. That captivating quality of her music, she said, has taken more than 30 years to perfect and is still changing today. She said a big part of that process has been rediscovering her blues roots.

Root Boy Productions presents Richey in concert on Thursday at Machinery Row in Great Falls. The show starts at 7 p.m.

Richey said while growing up, she was influenced by acts such as Led Zeppelin, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimi Hendrix. Little did she know then how deeply blues would influence her sound, which she discovered after sharing the stage with legendary performer Albert King early in her career, she said.

"I didn't think too much of blues and wasn't aware of how deep those bands', Led Zeppelin especially, roots were in blues," she said. "After I got the opportunity to play with Albert King I did some back-history lessons and realized that (blues legend) Willie Dixon was the sound of early Led Zeppelin, and I began to connect dots to the music I love."

Richey said while it's one thing to appreciate the blues and replicate the sound of her idols, it's another to bring her own sound to the table.

"I write a lot of my own material and also have chosen to take those critical songs that I cut my teeth on and make them my own," she said. "(Hendrix's) 'Hey Joe' is a signature song for me, but I'm committed to not doing someone else's version. I take what I learned from them and infuse it into my own vocabulary to pay tribute to them in a way that copying them wouldn't."

She often has been described as Vaughn or Hendrix inside a woman's body. One of the reasons for the comparisons is her dedication to her instrument.

Richey was born and raised in Lexington, Ky. She started learning guitar at age 15, practicing 12 hours a day for several years. She's been a guitar teacher for more than 30 years as well as a performer. She has lived in Cincinnati for many years since becoming a recording artist.

Richey said that commitment has been a big part of her success.

"(Performing) has been my main form of self-expression so it's critical for my survival, for the survival of my soul," she said. "With that said, in a way it's been easy. When you're trying to get your next breath you'll do anything. But it's been a lot of work. It takes everything you've got but when it's your main form of self-expression, it all seems worth it."

Richey said she's always been drawn to the soul-based songs that laid the groundwork for her rock influences since she was a child attending one of the first white churches in the country to integrate.

"I love 'blues rock,' and a lot of the gospel music I was listening to as a kid also tied into this," she said. "I grew up in Kentucky, and when I was a small child, we went to a lot of revivals and church services with the African-American community. I realized there that there was a drastic difference between black gospel and white gospel, and I later saw that with rock (songs). I gravitated to the blues- and gospel-based material because those rhythmic qualities drew me in, and I've found they really draw an audience in as well."

Throughout her career, Richey has shared the stage with such legends as Lonnie Mack, and has opened for Joe Cocker, Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter, Foghat, REO Speedwagon, George Thorogood, Warren Zevon and James Brown.
