It has been said -- Kelly Richey is considered one of the greatest female guitarists in the world.

Kelly Richey teams up with Sean McGary of Freakbass to write for next CD!!!

This past month has brough a lot of excitement in the songwriting department as I've recently teamed up with guitarist Sean McGary to begin writing songs for the next Kelly RIchey Band release!!!  I met Sean shortly before going to Canada, through Sonya Ziegler after she completed a photo shoot for him in March -- she had a hunch that Sean and I needed to meet and she was right.  I knew of Sean and his former band, "Freakbass" but we'd never officially met.  When we met we immediately clicked, and Sean went to work writing and pitching me song ideas -- so far I absolutely love everything he's sent!  I spent all day and night in my studio working with his ideas and jamming on my guitar to the sounds of funk that make my guitar come to life!!!  We're on a roll and I can't wait to see what unfolds.  Stay tuned for updates and new music!

BEHIND THE LENS: Sonya Ziegler Photography

I want to give you a glimpse into the work of Sonya Ziegler. She’s the one responsible for most of the photos of myself and my band that you see posted on my website and Facebook. Sonya is an artist/photographer who is originally from Canada, but has lived most of her life in California, until 2011, when she relocated to Cincinnati. Sonya has been active in the Fine Arts for over 30 years, and has developed a keen eye for color, concept, and composition. Blending Fine Art and photography is her passion, as evidenced in the artistic and creative photos that she produces. She’s easy to work with, as well, and really does make everyone feel comfortable in front of the camera. Her photography is unique with an artsy/cool vintage/urban/grunge/modern vibe that I just love. I used Sonya’s photos for the cover and back of my last two CD’s, and I couldn’t be happier with the way they came out! Sonya specializes in band/musician photography, but is available for portraits too (pet and human :>). Here is the link for her art website where you can check out her paintings: www.sonyaziegler.com, and here is the link to her photography website: www.sonyazieglerphotography.com/

Sonya maintains art studios in both California and Cincinnati, and is represented by Petroglyphe gallery in Mokelumne Hill, located in the beautiful foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Northern California. Come visit if you’re ever in the area!

Poetry & Songs by Kelly Richey -- "Front Porch"

From the midst of eight boxes of poetry, song lyrics, and journals, plus four milk crates full of cassette tapes with song ideas, my thoughts on life, band rehearsals...etc. I'm making my way through pages and pages of writings -- typing, typing, typing -- documenting what I find...

"Front Porch"

I'm sitting on my front porch trying to change my life -
I've tried the kitchen, the bedroom, my studio - the living room - now the porch.
I don't know what I might be doing wrong -
I feel so low - so disappointed - not really depressed -
I just feel like asking the question - is this all there is….?
I'm thinking about a couple of friends who killed themselves - I don't know why they did -
Maybe they didn't have a font porch -
Don't worry paper - I won't leave even you the unfilled explanations of self-pity of the sort -
I don't want to die but shit - I'm bored -
I work too much - I feel like if I could just get some traction under my feet -
I'd fly high - and when I landed -Maybe I'd even survive that too -
I dream about flying - I know I can -
I wanna charter flight but I've too much baggage -
I'm uninterested in going alone - though some days I'm not -
Today I am - today I love people - today I love "God" -
In my own fragile way I try to love -
I'm on the front porch - even if it were raining - I'd still be here.

Kelly Richey Plays Power Blues -- The Edmond Journal

Trio has gigs next week on Whyte
By Roger Levesque, edmontonjournal.com

The Kelly Richey Band Live
April 16th - 21st at Blues On Whyte

Kelly Richey Edmonton Journal

EDMONTON - At one time it was pretty unusual to find a woman heading up a blues power trio.

Just ask Kelly Richey.

“When I was in high school, girls didn’t play electric guitar,” explains the self-described “guitar-slinger,” who makes her Edmonton debut next week.

“There were The Runaways and Joan Jett and that was it, so when I would call for an audition, people were surprised and they’d tell me, ‘We filled that slot’. So I set off with a chip on each shoulder to prove I could play. I would get in my pickup truck and hit every jam session I could. It’s exhausting to think about a lot of the stuff I did.”

As she approaches her 50th birthday later this year, Richey is happy to note that things have improved.

“The landscape has changed, but I still get people coming up to me saying, ‘wow, you’re great for a girl’ or ‘I’ve never seen a girl play like that’, and I just accept that because I guess they haven’t. It’s not an insult. Men may have more physical strength but I work out to stay strong and physically fit and I’ve taught guitar lessons for 30 years.”

Richey feels she brings something else to the blues both as a player, and as a singer who works her own social and political awareness into songwriting.

“Where brute strength leaves off, my interpretation of things steps right in and women have a certain emotional quality that’s unique. It’s not better or worse, just different and it’s something special that we females bring to the instrument. But in the end I’m determined to have people judge me as a guitarist and not a female guitarist.”

Touring once kept her on the road up to 275 nights a year but when the rigours of hard living finally caught up with her, she decided to take a year off in 2010.

“I wasn’t at the top of my game and I knew if I was going to continue to do this, I needed to get it together because I wasn’t a kid anymore. Now I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been in and I’m thankful to take control of my career to do it the way I want to.”

To mark the next leg of her career, Richey released two albums in January on her Sweet Lucy label. Finding My Way Back Home features her quieter side playing a six-string acoustic guitar on a dozen tracks that traverse various blues and roots styles.

Live: 1996-2011 is a double-disc compilation of hot electric blues performances that shows why she’s been compared to Stevie Ray Vaughn and Janis Joplin. Oodles of guitarists have covered the Jimi Hendrix tune Hey Joe over the years but few draw it out as deliciously as Richey does live over 10 minutes.

You understand immediately that this woman loves to play and heading up a power trio is exactly the right format to hear her stretch. Bassist Jimmy Chavez has been with her since 2005, while drummer Danne Sheets puts in his fresh, driving momentum.

As a kid, Richey told people she was going to be a rock star or a preacher but in the end she says “Hendrix changed my life.” Growing up in Lexington, Ky., in the 1960s, she was exposed to both white and black gospel music. Her family attended one of the first Baptist churches to host an integrated congregation and she first performed piano there. At the same time, she was hearing new developments in rock ’n’ roll on the radio. She got her first electric guitar at 15.

“I didn’t realize the impact it would have on me later in life. I found myself gravitating toward blues-based rock but it took me some time to draw the connection between my gospel roots and the roots of rock. I was also dyslexic so school was difficult for me but the guitar was a powerful thing, part of my identity. I could hide behind the guitar and it allowed me to feel rebellious.”

She formed her own band and started touring as soon as she finished high school, eventually joining a group called Stealing Horses. Her four-year stint with that band ended in 1990. Proudly independent, Richey started a band again and formed her own label too, releasing her debut Sister’s Gotta Problem in 1994. She has put out a dozen others since then as career moves took her to Atlanta, New York and Nashville before she eventually settled in Cincinnati 15 years ago.

Poetry & Songs by Kelly Richey

I've begun the journey of unpacking the mass of writings that span from my early teens through the year 2001. I have eight boxes of poetry, song lyrics, and journals, plus four milk crates full of cassette tapes with song ideas, my thoughts on life, band rehearsals...etc. I've kept every piece of writing I've ever done, and this past week I was inspired to dive in and see what magic these boxes hold. So far, I have transferred over almost seventeen hours of song ideas from the first milk crate, and plan to weed out the best ideas to address either on my own, or with various co-writers that I've begun working with for my next CD. I'm doing the same with my written manuscripts -- I've asked Sonya to scan and read through the pages to help identify the nuggets that I can use for either song lyrics or poetry I can eventually publish.

I'm dyslexic, so reading comes slow for me and I've often felt that it has kept me from developing into the writer I've longed to be. Going through these old journals I'm finding that over the years I've captured my heart and my soul; I've writted about things too painful to face and I've captured observations and lessons learned completely. I'm thrilled to actually see that I CAN write -- dyslexia has been my wound and I've carried it like a prize. Funny how we hold on to things that are not always true-- we hide from our deepest fears and we fail to express to those around us all that we feel.

I've been sober for two and a half years now -- life (both written and unwritten) is easier to face now... forgivness is easier to embrace. Love, fear and lessons learned no longer need to hide in these pages of my past.

"Thickened"

Published in 1996, Brighton-Hill Literary Review, Volume 2

I once met a man - shooting lies in the wind,
He wanted my heart - so I gave him my hand.
He took all my money - for the stories he told,
I left him there standing - in the chill of his cold.
I once met a woman - with a stare right through me,
She wanted a life - so I gave her a key.
She took all my love - for the stories she wrote,
I left her in anger - with no sense and sheer pity.
I once met myself - a bit thickened by the wind,
I know more about love - and have fewer friends.
But I'm not the worse - for the things I have seen,
Each day I grow stronger - as I remember what they mean.
